Celebrating Kingston's Local Food Producers

On April 23, I gathered a group of politicians, municipal staff, economic development professionals, local chefs and farmers to talk about some of our great family run local food businesses.  

We heard about how Sun Harvest Greenhouses produce some of Kingston's best tasting tomatoes 8 months of the year, with no pesticides and in a completely controlled environment.  After that, we visited the Sonset Farm who shared with us a vision of working with the land to feed local families.  Sonset provide our community with a seasonal CSA, grass fed beef, and a small organic dairy farm.  Our tour finished with a visit to the Limestone Organic Creamery.  Their locally produced milk has travelled less than one mile from farm to creamery, and is delivered directly to over 400 homes in the Kingston area. I believe Kingston is the perfect place for small, niche farms to start, establish themselves and have an easy market to sell to.  There is so much great land within a thirty minute drive to downtown, where any Kingstonian can learn about how their food is produced, who is harvesting it, and where it comes from.  Many Kingston chefs already work to source as much of their menu locally as possible, and we can increase this.  

New farmers in our area are creating breweries, producing raw milk cheese, and innovating with precision agriculture, such as the high-tech milk operation at Rustowil farm, run by the Moreland family in Kingston East.  The future for agriculture in Kingston is bright, and everyone
